Residents can purchase subsidised climbing plant packages and native hedges this autumn through two campaigns run by Duurzaam Den Haag and the municipality.
The initiatives form part of Operatie Steenbreek, which encourages residents, schools, and organisations to replace paving stones with plants.
Adding vegetation helps cool urban areas during hot weather, provides habitat for wildlife, and makes the city more pleasant to live in.
Climbing kits for exterior walls
In partnership with Tuincentrum Ockenburgh, residents can order ready-made climbing plant kits online until 21 October for 35 euros instead of the regular 70 euros.
Each kit includes three climbing plants suited for either sunny or shaded walls, a trellis or wire support set, and two bags of planting soil.
Residents must remove three paving stones for each kit purchased. The packages can be collected at Tuincentrum Ockenburgh on 29 and 30 October between 12:00 and 20:00.
Discounts on native hedges
Residents with garden space can also receive discounts ranging from 25 to 70 euros on native hedges, organised alongside Sprinklr and IVN Natuureducatie.
Each 2.5-metre hedge consists of 11 native plants and soil improver, providing privacy as well as food and shelter for birds, hedgehogs, bees, and butterflies.
Hedges can be ordered through Sprinklr with a discount code until 23 October, with home delivery scheduled for 18 November.
