A fundraising appeal for a local father of four has raised more than €30,000 in just a few days. The campaign began after a video showed him giving away his last remaining money to help a stranger.

Influencer Tonny Wehrmeijer was filming a hidden-camera video inside a supermarket in Den Haag Zuidwest to test how generous strangers are. He approached the man in an aisle and asked for €1 to help buy wet wipes for a baby.

The Kurdish father initially declined, saying he only had €2.50 in cash left to buy a bag of bread. He then returned after checking his phone, saw he had 75 cents left in his bank account, and paid for the wipes.

Reward leads to public fundraiser

Outside the shop, Wehrmeijer revealed that he was recording a video and was not actually in need. Touched that the man had spent his last cents to assist him, the content creator handed him €100 as a reward.

The clip circulated widely online, drawing praise from viewers including actress Carice van Houten. An online collection was subsequently launched to help the man and his family out of debt, quickly passing the €30,000 mark.
