Dozens of birdwatchers gathered in the woods at Landgoed Marlot on the afternoon of Sunday 18 October to catch a glimpse of a nutcracker.

They came from across the country, including Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

Lars travelled from Eindhoven once he heard the bird had turned up in the Netherlands, after starting out on robins and great tits.

He was struck by how close the bird came and how little it seemed to mind the attention.

Lars was pleased with his photographs, one of which shows the woods reflected in the bird’s eye, and he said he might turn one into a poster.

An unusual visitor from Siberia

It is almost twenty years since a nutcracker was last seen in the Netherlands.

The species normally lives in Siberia, but a shortage of food there has pushed it towards the Netherlands in what is known as an invasion.

Dozens of spotters stood or sat in the bushes waiting for a view of it.

Carola, who came specially from Rotterdam, said it remains an open question whether the bird will survive here.

Ron said it is a beautiful bird and that chances to photograph one are rare.
