Kunstmuseum Den Haag will put its batik collection on public display for the first time next spring, with more than 150 pieces going on show from 20 March 2027.
The exhibition runs until 29 August 2027 and brings together textiles, fashion, furniture and interior pieces.
Batik is a centuries-old Javanese art form that came to play a striking role in Dutch art and design around 1900.
Batik across art and everyday objects
Dutch artists adopted the technique and visual language of Javanese batik and turned it into something entirely new, applying it to textiles and also to everyday items such as folding screens, book bindings and even napkin rings.
The museum looks after a major collection of Javanese batik as well as Dutch applied art from the years 1890 to 1930, when artists reworked the Javanese technique in their own way.
Showing the two collections side by side draws an explicit link between these different batik worlds for the first time, through objects that range from fashion to furniture.
