Two years ago a majority of the Provincial Council of South Holland decided that the province’s pop music should be better protected as intangible cultural heritage.
Erfgoedhuis Zuid-Holland was then asked by the province to map that history, working with Popunie and the audio collective Visionair Ordinair.
The results are being presented as an online canon and a podcast series, both appearing this autumn.
The project covers the period from 1955 to the present and focuses on music made by musicians in South Holland, both then and now.
At the heart of it are the striking moments, places, people and stories that shaped that history.
The podcast series is called De Platenzaak and runs to six episodes, the first of which can already be heard as a preview.
That opening episode deals in part with the punk music that emerged in the late 1970s.
It also tells how punk in the province kept changing shape, from punk rock to gabber and from homemade fanzines to the music being made now.
The episode is available on Spotify, Apple and YouTube, and the remaining five are due later this year.
