Rinus Jenezon, 78, says SVV Scheveningen ended his volunteer role in a letter after his summer holiday, bringing an abrupt end to six decades of service.
He had planned to carry on until he turned 80 and says his jobs included marking out the pitch, selling sausages, checking tickets, working behind the bar, cleaning changing rooms and running a youth team.
He won The Hague’s volunteer award in 2022 and says the club was his whole life.
What angers him most is that the city’s social service has taken over his duties, which costs the club nothing.
Different accounts of volunteer departures
Another former volunteer, Sjaak Jansen, says he too left on bad terms after 43 years, and that he got only a text message rather than a letter.
SVV chair Arjan van Sliedregt rejects the accusations and says Jenezon’s account is untrue and ignores important nuance.
The club secretary put the end of several volunteer roles down to budget reasons, which Jenezon calls absurd given his compensation of 175 euros a month.
He misses the friends he made at Houtrust but plans to spend his Saturdays riding his scooter to his girlfriend in Delft, dancing and going out.
