A ban on gathering in groups took effect in the Muziekbuurt in Rijswijk on Saturday 17 October, aimed at young people who have been causing trouble in the neighbourhood.

Anyone who breaks the ban will be arrested at once and fined at the police station, and can only go home when a parent collects them.

Mayor Huri Sahin announced the tougher approach on Tuesday 13 October, saying the nuisance has to stop and that young people already known to the authorities can expect a visit.

Fires and fireworks

The number of incidents kept rising despite the efforts of police and council enforcement officers.

Two scooters were set alight on the Admiraal Helfrichsingel earlier this month and a group of young people ran off before officers could arrest anyone.

A police car was also pelted with heavy fireworks recently.

A year of trouble

The nuisance has been going on for more than a year and has escalated recently, with arson, vandalism and disturbances in the area.

One resident says the group is made up of young people aged 15 to 19 who live in the neighbourhood themselves.

Sahin also wants camera surveillance at the Waldhoornplein and plans to meet residents soon.
