Le Café, at Oude Molstraat 26A, is a small bistro in The Hague’s Hofkwartier, owned by Armand, with André as chef.
Its dark wood, faded walls and French photographs give the narrow restaurant a lived-in feel, while cigarette smoke from the terrace drifts through open windows.
The reviewer tried pork rillettes on baguette, which tasted rich and earthy but were judged too salty.
The steak tartare follows a recipe used at the restaurant for twenty years, with cornichons, onion, capers, pepper, parsley and Tabasco alongside the beef.
French classics and a dry dessert
Bavette with shallot sauce was praised for its tender meat and balance of caramelised shallots and red wine, served with green beans, snow peas and thin fries with homemade mayonnaise.
The profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate were the weak point, with hard, dry pastry.
The wine list includes a light, fruity spätburgunder from the Pfalz, and the reviewer described its prices as friendly.
Starters cost €8 to €29, main courses €22 to €32.50 and desserts €9 to €17; the bill for the meal was €118.
The restaurant is open daily until 01:00, from 16:00 on weekdays and 15:00 at weekends.
