Hague band THE VELCRO released a double EP on Wednesday 30 September and put out the video for the song Kamikaze on the same day.
The record is called Ride With Us / Always Be Horse and comes in two parts: the first four songs appeared back in 2025, and the second half is made up of five new tracks.
Band members Toine and Lisette talked about the new music, their creative process and their plans for the coming period in the Ochtendshow met Sangie on Den Haag FM.
How the songs come together
‘We just dropped those online. We thought: yeah, fuck it, it is just really fun to do’, Toine said of the new tracks.
According to Lisette, the creative process is driven mainly by the boys with the guitars.
A new riff or tune is usually the starting point, after which the band jams, and something tends to take shape quickly.
‘We just churn those songs out’, Toine joked.
‘It is really a band that grew out of friendship, so the click was made quickly for the tunes.’ The band describes its own music as psychedelic surf punk, although their parents have a different word for it: ‘noise’, Lisette said, laughing.
The members themselves listen to a wide range of styles, from alternative music and disco to soul and techno.
Filming inside the Wall of Death
For the Kamikaze video, the band went looking for danger.
They filmed at a Wall of Death, a large wooden cylinder in which motorcyclists ride around at high speed and perform tricks.
The idea came from Toine, according to Lisette. ‘Toine has all sorts of crazy ideas.
He says: we are going to play here and then loads of motorbikes are going to ride around us.’
That was not without risk. The band was allowed to look at the Wall of Death in advance and noticed straight away how nerve-racking it was.
‘Then you stand up there at the top of the cylinder and you feel all those planks shaking’, Lisette said.
In the end, being down inside the cylinder turned out to be less frightening than standing at the top.
Toine had read up beforehand and watched a number of videos. ‘You have scratches on that wall.
Every scratch equals one fall, and there are a lot of scratches’, he said. Despite the nerves, the recording went well.
Over the coming period THE VELCRO will be on tour, playing in several cities in the Netherlands, after which the band returns home to The Hague.
