The pilot for the Haagse Hopper in Benoordenhout will stop on 1 January 2027.
An evaluation showed that while the on-demand service worked well technically and satisfied users, passenger numbers remained below expectations.
The eight-person bus has operated on demand in parts of Benoordenhout since January 2023.
Passengers can book rides between the neighbourhood, city centre, and Den Haag Centraal.
Costs outweigh daily passenger numbers
The municipal executive found the annual costs of around €300,000 too high to fund permanently.
While rider numbers grew in the initial years, they stabilised in 2026 at roughly 45 passengers a day, short of the expected 60 to 70.
Neighbourhood group Wijkvereniging Benoordenhout and passenger organisations Rover and MetroCOV noted the service fills an important role for residents, particularly older people facing long walks to regular stops.
The municipality noted that regular public transport, the Regiotaxi, and local volunteer initiatives remain available, though they do not offer identical flexibility.
Experiences from the four-year pilot will inform future on-demand transit projects across the city.
