A4 widening near The Hague shelved again

The cabinet has no money for the motorway project or €270 million for regional rail and Rotterdam metro expansion. Funding remains for the Vlietlijn and upgrades to the Oude Lijn railway.

The Dutch cabinet has again postponed the widening of the A4 near The Hague, saying it has no money while maintenance of roads, bridges and railways costs far more than planned.

Transport minister Vincent Karremans published his list of scrapped projects on Friday 16 October, dropping the extra lanes on the A4 and two grade-separated crossings on the N14 towards Leidschendam-Voorburg.

Those crossings were meant to ease traffic on the approach to the busy Mall of the Netherlands.

The Hague and Rotterdam also lose €270 million for expanding RandstadRail and the Rotterdam metro, even though operators expect more passengers and the trams are already full at rush hour.

Rail plans that survive

Karremans is holding on to the €360 million for the Vlietlijn, the tram line planned through the new Binckhorst district, where the city wants to build about 12,500 homes.

If building goes too slowly, the cabinet can still shift the money to a faster-moving project.

The €1.6 billion renewal of the Oude Lijn between Leiden and Dordrecht goes ahead, including a second track between Delft-Zuid and Schiedam.

Rijkswaterstaat was ready to start work on the A4 six years ago, until the nitrogen crisis stopped it.
