René Rakier is 93, and listeners who hear the age of the Hague master pianist are often surprised.

Musicians of his generation sometimes sit down at the piano again after a long career to show how they once played, but rarely every month, for a full hour, with music that takes more than a quick leaf through the score.

Rakier does exactly that, and when his health allows he still practises a few hours a day.

Morning concert in Scheveningen

What that work produces can be heard on Tuesday 6 October from 11:00 to 12:00 at Wijkwinkel Scheveningen, Gentsestraat 22a.

The concert is free and is part of the series he has long played on the first Tuesday of each month.

In a recording made on 1 September 2026, Rakier plays Etudes 8 to 12 from the Etudes Op. 25 by Frédéric Chopin.

An hour of Chopin for nothing on a Tuesday morning is one of many things in the city that cost no money at all, and there are plenty more in our guide to free things to do in The Hague.
