There are three numbers and you need to know which is which before you need any of them.
For a life-threatening emergency it is 112.
For something urgent between 08:00 and 17:00 on a weekday it is your own GP practice.
For anything urgent outside those hours in The Hague it is 070 346 96 69, the Hadoks huisartsenspoedpost, and that call comes before any journey.
What you do not do is drive to a hospital.
The emergency department is not a walk-in service here, and the system is built on the assumption that a doctor decides you belong there before you arrive.
The out-of-hours GP post
Hadoks runs the evening, night and weekend GP service for Den Haag, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Wassenaar and Rijswijk.
It is staffed by the region’s own GPs working shifts, and it exists for care that cannot wait until your own practice reopens.
Not care that would be more convenient tonight.
Care that cannot wait.
There are three locations.
HagaZiekenhuis Leyweg at Charlotte Jacobslaan 10 in Den Haag runs Monday to Thursday from 17:00 to 08:00 and straight through the weekend from Friday 17:00 to Monday 08:00.
HMC Westeinde at Westeinde 150 and HMC Antoniushove at Burgemeester Banninglaan 1 in Leidschendam open weekdays from 17:00 to midnight, and at weekends and on public holidays from 08:00 to midnight.
Residents of the four municipalities can only be seen by appointment, which is what the phone call is for.
A triage assistant takes the details, and the outcome may be advice, a telephone consultation with the doctor, an appointment at one of the posts, or a home visit.
Ring first even if you are certain you need to be seen, because turning up unannounced does not get you in faster.
What it costs
The tariffs are set annually by the Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit and are the same at every post.
For 2026 a telephone consultation is 35 euro, a consultation at the post is 297.04 euro, and a home visit is 445.56 euro.
Those numbers look alarming and then stop mattering.
If you are insured, the bill goes straight to your insurer, and the out-of-hours GP post does not come off your excess, because GP care including the huisartsenpost is exempt from the 385 euro eigen risico.
You pay nothing.
If you are uninsured you pay at the visit by card, and then the figures are exactly as alarming as they look, which is one more argument for sorting out insurance in your first weeks.
The emergency department, and the referral rule
HMC concentrates its emergency care at one site.
The SEH is at HMC Westeinde, Lijnbaan 32, and HMC’s own instruction is blunt: only go to the Spoedeisende Hulp once your doctor or 112 has referred you there.
HMC Bronovo and HMC Antoniushove do not have one.
The other emergency department is the Spoedplein at HagaZiekenhuis Leyweg, Charlotte Jacobslaan 10, which puts the adult emergency department, children’s emergency care, the out-of-hours GP post and an emergency pharmacy under one roof and connects them to acute admissions.
It is the largest in the region.
Here too, the hospital’s position is that your GP should judge whether an emergency department visit is needed, unless the situation is life-threatening, in which case you call 112.
The practical effect of that arrangement at the Spoedplein is that a call to 070 346 96 69 can send you to the same building either way.
The triage decides whether you are seen by the out-of-hours GP or handed across to the SEH, which is considerably better than guessing at the door.
One financial difference is worth knowing in advance.
GP care is exempt from the excess; hospital care is not on the exemption list.
An emergency department attendance will therefore eat into your 385 euro where a huisartsenpost visit for the same complaint would not.
That is not a reason to avoid the SEH when you need it, but it is a reason to make the phone call first.
Children
The Juliana Kinderziekenhuis, part of HagaZiekenhuis, is at Els Borst-Eilersplein 275 and is the region’s children’s hospital.
Children’s emergency care also sits on the Spoedplein at Leyweg.
The route in is the same as for adults: 112 if it is life-threatening, otherwise the number for the out-of-hours post, which triages children with the same system and a lower threshold for seeing them.
Medicines in the middle of the night
A prescription written at 23:00 is no use if nothing is open.
The spoedapotheek exists for exactly that, and during out-of-hours it is intended for urgent supply only, not for collecting a repeat you forgot about.
There is an out-of-hours surcharge, which Hadoks says can run to 40 euro.
Two details save an unnecessary second journey.
The opening hours of the emergency pharmacies and the GP posts do not line up exactly, so the pharmacy you are sent to may not be in the building you were treated in.
And you must bring photo identification showing your BSN, plus a card or cash, because the surcharge is paid on the spot.
How Dutch pharmacies work in ordinary hours is a separate business and a good deal cheaper.
Teeth, which follow different rules entirely
A dental emergency does not go through the huisartsenpost.
Your own dentist’s answering machine names the duty practice, and there is a regional out-of-hours dental service at HMC Westeinde, Lijnbaan 32, reachable on 0900 86 02, which is a paid number.
Adult dental treatment is not covered by the basic package, so you pay for it, typically somewhere between 50 and 350 euro depending on what is done.
The gap between dental care and insurance is the single most expensive surprise in Dutch healthcare for new arrivals.
Mental health crisis
If someone is in immediate danger, 112 is the number.
For suicidal thoughts, 113 Zelfmoordpreventie answers by phone on 113 and by chat, twenty-four hours a day, free and anonymous, with an English-language service at 113.nl/english.
The line only works from inside the Netherlands.
Outside a crisis, the out-of-hours GP post can assess an acute mental health problem and involve the regional crisis service, and in office hours your own practice is the route.
Mental health care in English in The Hague covers the non-urgent paths, which are slower and quite different.

Put those in your phone before you need them, and put the postcode of your own registered GP practice in there too, because the triage assistant will ask for it.
GP practices in The Hague all divert to the same regional number after hours, so the recorded message you reach is the right one.
