Work on the Hubertustunnel has faced ongoing delays since last year, and the municipality has not yet set a new reopening date.
Since late April, contractor Strukton has been paying a fine of 13,000 euros for every day the tunnel remains closed.
Commuters face daily detour delays
Drivers navigating the closure report significant extra travel time on detour routes around the city. Commuters heading through Koningskade, Raamweg, and towards the Vogelwijk describe morning gridlock and trips taking up to an hour longer.
Some motorists note that diverted traffic has worn down local road surfaces and pushed congestion into surrounding residential neighbourhoods.
Rising frustration over lack of clarity
Residents have expressed frustration over the absence of weekly updates and clear timelines from municipal officials. Several point to added fuel costs and disrupted work schedules caused by testing issues on internal tunnel systems.
While some commuters have adjusted their daily schedules or switched to cycling towards Wassenaar, others voice exasperation that major infrastructure work in The Hague continues to suffer prolonged setbacks.
