Kunstmuseum is hosting an extended public programme around fashion, heritage and identity in connection with the Reflections on Fashion exhibition. The schedule includes guided tours, workshops and discussions covering topics such as the female gaze, identity, inclusion and garment techniques.
The events begin on Sunday 20 September with a focus on the Afro-Surinamese angisa. Organisation Tailors & Wearers will lead a folding masterclass and live demonstration explaining the craft, traditions and meanings behind the headscarf.
Repair workshops and traditional dress
On Sunday 27 September, DE STEEK will run a workshop dedicated to visibly repairing damaged clothes. Participants will learn how to mend garments using embroidery stitches, colourful threads and leftover fabrics.
Surinamese traditional dress returns to the programme on Sunday 11 October. Fashion designer and researcher Denzel Veerkamp will join Tailors & Wearers for a tour exploring the history and modern role of the koto.
Curator tours and historical shows
Co-curator Janice Deul will lead a tour of the exhibition on Saturday 31 October. Deul created her own room within the exhibition and will discuss her selections and key themes.
Fashion historian Birthe Weijkamp and the Nederlandse Kostuumvereniging will present short historical fashion shows on Saturday 14 November. The presentations cover changing silhouettes and styles spanning the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.
The programme continues on Saturday 12 December with a gallery tour led by artist and designer Lisa Konno. Konno will discuss the personal and social themes behind the items displayed in her exhibition room.
