Oranjehotel embroidery reveals wartime women’s stories: Around 2,500 women were imprisoned in Scheveningen during the Second World War. Their preserved textile work documented daily hardships and carried smuggled resistance messages.
Rare woolly mammoth bones found on Zandmotor: A Wassenaar fossil hunter discovered two fused toe bones from an ice age mammoth on the artificial beach near Monster. A paleontologist is now researching what caused the unusual fusion.
Road plan cuts through local maintenance headquarters: Municipal plans for the Vlietzone put a new access road directly through the headquarters of Van Lochem Nederland. The family business has retained lawyers to challenge the project.
Average living space in The Hague remains unchanged: Residents in the city still have just over 44 square metres of living space each, matching figures from a decade ago. A rise in single-person households balanced out the construction of smaller flats.
Avonturia receives city honours for 50th anniversary: The Hague has presented an award to Avonturia de Vogelkelder to mark its fiftieth anniversary. The business began in a home basement and now operates as a large animal experience centre.
Thirty-eight years on the Haagse Markt: Nevzat Gurel arrived from Turkey in 1988 and quickly found work at the market. Decades later, he runs his own stall and plans to stay as long as possible.
Historic horse racing trophy returns to Duindigt: The Haagse Ooievaar was awarded on Sunday after an eight-year absence. City alderman Richard de Mos presented the silver stork challenge cup at the track in Wassenaar.
Driver settles €100,000 tax debt on the spot: A joint enforcement operation in Scheveningen and Duindorp uncovered nearly €200,000 in outstanding motor vehicle taxes on Friday. Multi-agency checks also targeted illegal subletting, transit fare evasion and traffic offences.
